What Recess is
Recess is a record-keeping service for behaviour, medication, and classroom observations about autistic children. It helps parents, teachers, and clinicians keep one clearer timeline while preserving role-based privacy.
Recess supports communication and record-keeping. It is not a substitute for clinical judgement, medical diagnosis, prescription, treatment, school safeguarding processes, or professional documentation systems.
Not medical advice
Recess is not a medical device and does not provide clinical advice. Recess does not diagnose, treat, prescribe, recommend medication, or make decisions about a child’s care.
Decisions about a child’s care should be made with qualified clinicians. If you are a parent or teacher, do not make medical decisions based only on Recess records. If you are a clinician, use Recess as contextual information, not as a replacement for your professional records.
Who can use Recess
- Parents and legal guardians managing records for a child.
- Teachers invited by a parent or guardian.
- Clinicians or qualified professionals invited by a parent or guardian.
- Other authorised adult care-team members we approve for pilot use.
Recess is for adults. Children should not create accounts or use an adult account directly.
Your account
You must provide accurate account information, keep your login secure, and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access. You are responsible for activity under your account unless that activity happened because of a security failure on our side.
Consent and data sharing
Recess uses a parent-led consent model. Parents and guardians decide which teachers and clinicians can access a child’s records and can revoke that access. Teachers and clinicians may only use records for the purpose of supporting the child whose records they are authorised to see.
Your data
You own the data you put into Recess. We process it to provide the service, maintain access controls, keep audit logs, support exports and deletion requests, and improve reliability.
We will not sell your data, use it for advertising, or train models on child records.
Acceptable use
You agree to use Recess responsibly and only for authorised care-team record-keeping.
- Do not impersonate another person.
- Do not record information about a child you are not authorised to support.
- Do not share another person’s records without permission.
- Do not misuse child data, harass anyone, or upload unlawful content.
- Do not attempt to access data you are not authorised to see.
- Do not reverse engineer, attack, scrape, or disrupt the service.
- Do not use Recess in a way that breaches child protection, privacy, or professional obligations.
Mandatory reporting
Recess does not replace mandatory reporting obligations. Teachers, clinicians, and other professionals must keep using their normal reporting channels for suspected abuse, neglect, or risk of harm.
Service availability
We aim to keep Recess available, but we do not promise uninterrupted service. Maintenance, emergency fixes, provider outages, security issues, or events outside our control may interrupt access. If Recess is unavailable and care decisions are urgent, use your usual non-app methods.
Termination
You can stop using Recess at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these terms, misuse child data, create security risk, or if we are legally required to do so. Where practicable, we will explain the reason and support data export or deletion.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Australian law, Recess is provided “as is”. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of Recess.
Nothing in these terms limits rights that cannot be limited under the Australian Consumer Law or other applicable laws.
Changes to the service or terms
We may change Recess or these terms as the service evolves. If a change materially affects your rights or obligations, we will update this page and notify users through the app where appropriate.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
Privacy policy
Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information and child-related records. If there is a conflict on a privacy-specific matter, the Privacy Policy takes precedence.
